is your project right for uylf?

up your legs forever intends to specialize in hook-based music with an adventurous/experimental sound.  if your music is catchy but not experimental, or experimental but not catchy, there's still a chance we'll want it.  but mostly we want to feature music that lives in both camps.

whether it's a shout-along chorus, a hooky guitar/synth line, an irresistible beat or goosebump-inducing harmonies, we want every song on uylf to grab the listener and make him/her come back for more.  are we a "pop" netlabel?  in the broadest sense, sure.  while we hope to feature all sorts of genres, every release on uylf will proudly wear its pop sensibilities.

as for the experimental aspect, all we mean is that we don't want to make people listen to music they've heard before.  we (begrudgingly) concede that there's room for the nickelbacks and the celine dions in the world... but not on uylf!  it's all about the treatment.  keep your arrangement or your delivery special, make it yours alone.  surprise us.  mix elements you've always wanted to hear combined.  fool around with computers — they are not acoustic music's enemy.  over all, sound like you.

so we're just giving away your music?

uylf is a free digital netlabel.  that means that downloads of our music in mp3 format (and maybe FLAC eventually) are free for all listeners.  if you wish to sell CDs or another physical format of your works, we can set up a paypal button on your download page for visitors who wish to buy them.  however, if you go that route, you are responsible for the manufacture and mailing of any discs, and the payments will go directly to you.  uylf is strictly digital, and strictly free.

all uylf digital releases are offered under a Creative Commons (CC) license, with no derivative works or commercial use allowed (unless authorized by the copyright holder, i.e. the artist).

wondering why anybody would put their music out this way?  well, for starters, promotion.  we know some people who scour netlabels weekly for new stuff to load into their mp3 players.  releasing via netlabel is a great way to make new fans both locally and worldwide.  it's also a terrific way to put out music that wouldn't be right for release in other venues/formats.  for example, some artists/bands have an EP in them that's just so different from their usual output that they choose to put it out on a netlabel (often pseudonymously).  the music's gotta be heard, right?  finally, we like to think that there's something extra-special about being featured on a loving label like uylf, that spotlights each release in the context of its labelmates, and slowly builds a trademark feeling or "sound."
