liner notes
up your legs now is this label's mission statement. it's our musical philosophy encapsulated in 2 hours. it's our greeting to the world. it also just might be one of the best compilations you've ever heard.
we begin with a gentle kick in the head from mike debenham, whose we value your opinion is both classy and witty, aside from being compulsively hummable. next up, balor knights share a song from their recent series of musical tributes; it's a testament to their serious talent that you'll know who they're honouring within the first bar... but new transaural melodie is such a great song that you soon start to forget that other band altogether. the eardrums, whose insane live shows have been setting winnipeg ablaze, show that they're equally adept in the studio with the spastic, blistering i don't know what it is.
jordan hirsch describes the narrative voice of how does it feel? as a lovesick, psychotic ship's computer — and we're happy to dance the robot to this sci-fi love song. wistful synths and future-disco beats abound in kato ninetails' groovy and rousing be somebody. can you handle the copious amounts of catchiness and cuteness vom vorton bestows upon you in like cats and dogs? not only can you, we think you will — over and over again.
what's both enchantingly sweet and just a little frightening? how about halfpenny orchestra's lovely and skewed ode to nuthouse breakfast in waffle day. call-and-response vocals mix with interstellar reverb in autoclamp's phenomenally catchy love in space (pts. i and ii). next up, we have i got wood, which has been described by johnny cashpoint as his "one and a half entendre" song, but we love it on many other levels, too. talented london-based duo hellshank serenade their analogue girl with wah guitar, drum machines, and the snakiest synth solo ever put to tape.
they just don't come any more infectious than scott mcbride's certain disaster; if you'd paid for this compilation, we'd offer a "this gets stuck in your head of your money back" guarantee. tokyo-based rombiculus channels 70s piano pop in the brilliant mind control, a song so ludicrously catchy you'll think he's exerted control over your mind. on the trippy and hypnotic my love is a noun, steven wesley guiles uses minimal elements to make a slinky lasting impression. eight six origin bursts through the wall koolaid-style and knocks you flat on your ass with the clap-happy panda hat.
the mighty and prolific josh belville takes his distortion pedal for a spin, and we get to ride shotgun. saturday is somehow both wistful and buoyant. deedee & the dikks have single-handedly invented the genre of porn-folk with riding a penis into battle. you'll either love us or hate us for getting this one stuck in your brain... and it will be, for weeks on end. capping off disc 1, tyson brinacombe has an important nutritional lesson to impart, via plonky synths and electro drums. three meals a day is wisdom with a mean flow, you can't argue with that.
disc 2 kicks off with a trio of mini-epics from three continents. phlex brazenly turns conventional song structure on its ass and sounds like nothing we've ever heard before. oddbod's roller-coaster ride the pig of loveliness lives in a musical realm all its own but still manages to recall pretty much the whole white album over the course of its 3 minute runtime. the first listen to charlie in the box's science fiction is unpredictable and exhilarating. it's a new favourite in our players and we hope it will be in yours. isaac quatorze delivers the uylf-exclusive ban ban ban, which promises to be the only electro-krautrock you'll ever hear with a solo on pentatonic boomwhackers.
bill.mu's glam-rock swagger packs a huge wallop on the shout-along protest song we rule the world. denmark's tim wille wants to move your brain, your heart and — oh yes — your ass on the masterful song for a better person. comin' out yo speaker like a college radio hit from the 90s, hangin' on is a sweetly catchy tune from jeff keister & andrea autrey that begs to be sung along to.
expendable friend checks in with a haunting and addictive number called this will never be my home. we think she's brilliant and you should go listen to everything she's recorded. we follow it up with an incredible and melodically seductive acoustic piece from winlock toledo — if theirs is the weight is one of the songs we crossed our fingers tightly to obtain for the compilation, and luckily winlock agreed. next up, steffan pitzel's instant classic luck is so smoky, sexy and sultry you'll want to put on high heels and eye shadow by the time the guitar solo starts.
hard rockers face of einstein put on their hip-hop hats to bring us a dope homage to both the movie rounders and their hometown of winnipeg on peg city rounders. from skittery beats to full-fuzz bass, boltoph has it all covered in the wintry and propulsive eyes odd. note for note and beat for beat, too bad no robots' frankly, i don't mind is a big bag of win, the whirlwind of synth sounds constantly changing. the das binky recording collective bring us the whimsical science fiction / fantasy, which frontman john argentiero has described as a fictional barenaked ladies outtake.
suddenly we're thrown to center stage in a musical, where our lead played by elaine dimasi rejoices and aches to the tune of the beautiful and completely singular catch me (reprise). then roger, roll contributes the lovely and stunningly intimate song for what it's worth, which if you're anything like us will leave you speechless after each listen. and how do we finish this milestone inaugural compilation? the enigmatic man called hoopshank played every instrument on the astonishing and epic i would do it.

If I had to pick one word to describe this, that word would indeed be "catchy". A monster collection of head-nodders. More please!!!
