liner notes

the unstoppable expendable friend returns with a new collection to usher in autumn.  here she offers a mostly upbeat set, replete with indelible melodies, super strong lyrics that are somehow both wistful and playful, and that voice we uylfers can't get enough of.

building on her already impressive songbook, expendable friend (or Jacqui, to those fortunate enough to befriend her) is highlighting new strengths every time we catch her tunes.  excitement is in the air: get on this bandwagon now with your new favourite EP... and you're welcome.

here, sing along:

EXPLORER SONG

We put our flag in the ground, so now we own it
And all the tundra wasteland laying round
But not content with our lot, we board an aeroplane
To take us to the warmer climate south

Think it over

And so we take up the reins and throw our weight around
When really, we would rather be elsewhere
Don't play forgetful with me - it isn't worth it
And there really isn't time or room to spare

Think it over, as you gather wood for the fire
Think it over

You're like a stranger to me, you never notice
The fire warms my bones as well as yours
No western luxuries here, just sheets of canvas
A deadline and an aeroplane to catch

Think it over

Think it over, as you gather wood for the fire
Think it over

I'M SENSITIVE, YOU SEE

Where did I leave my car?
It must be somewhere here
Cos this is where I came in
With the cashpoint on the left
The shoe store on the right
I made a mental note this time

Cos I'm sensitive, you see
And my navigational ability
Becomes a sore deficiency
When you laugh at me

Cos you dragged it on for months
'Til everyone was bored
Until I got quite mad with you
And the complex still remains
For now I try to hide
Any weaknesses from you

Cos I'm sensitive, you see
And my navigational ability
Becomes a sore deficiency
When you laugh at me
When you laugh at me

And with fifteen minutes gone
I still can't see that car
I left it by the section sign
The one where I stand now
I've wandered twice around
I'm fairly sure it's not here now

And I don't know what to do
But I do know that I won't be calling you

Cos I'm sensitive, you see
And my navigational ability
Is still a sore deficiency

RESEARCH

While you were out I went through your room
Just trying to get to know you
I opened your drawers, but one at a time
Just in case you arrived
You said you were out for the rest of the day
That's an invitation, I'd say!
Plated in gold, and delivered to me
But then you came back early

I had a lot to do
Cos I'd hardly started looking through your pictures from school
And the letters were taking quite a while
Cos they weren't in any order in the pile

I managed to get them all back in the drawer
Just as you came through the door
And then I came up with a brilliant lie
And you bought it first time
And now that I've found your personal drawer
I will be back there for more
Whenever you're out and I'm here on my own
And I'm feeling like there's more...

...to get to know
Cos there's things I want to find out that you'll never disclose
In the interests of my security
I could be living with a psycho or a thief!
So I need to know the nature of the beast

OF WARDS AND CORRIDORS

Please forgive me when I drop your hand
It's just that I'm not entirely in my head
These days
I promise there's nowhere I'd rather be
Than sitting beside you
As we both drift in and out of sleep

I left you, for a moment, in her care
She pulled back the curtain
Like I wasn't welcome there
Tell me what was said while I was gone
What was she here for?
Does she know what's going on?

Before your eyelids feel the pull of gravity

MYOPIC

As you were
I've not come to search the hold
Or read your mind
All your cards have been laid out for quite some time

And we're never gonna get better
We're broken at the interface
There's not a lot to say
No, we're never gonna get better
We live in a myopic daze
Thinking that it's all OK
Scrabbling in the dirt for things to say

And to your muse
Who, as you told me, wouldn't know how to refuse
Go, take that flight
And thank me for tearing the scales from eyes

Cos we're never gonna get better
We're broken at the interface
There's not a lot to say
No, we're never gonna get better
We live in a myopic daze
Thinking that it's all OK
Scrabbling in the dirt for things to say

WHAT HAVE I DONE NOW?

I woke up today, and it was all wrong
Before I had said a single word to you
Did I kick you at night, while I was asleep?
Was I badly behaved in a dream you had?

Hello, hello? What have I done now?
That look could take someone's eye out
Hello, hello? What have I done wrong?
There's always something to be sorry for

I promised you things and made them all true
I plied you with gifts, though I could ill afford to
The more that I give, the more you demand
But not with your words, it's always with THAT tone

Hello, hello? What have I done now?
That look could take someone's eye out
Hello, hello? What have I done wrong?
There's always something to be sorry for

I keep it all together
But perhaps I should let it fall apart
Cos nothing's really endless
Not even the patience in my heart

Hello, hello? What have I done now?
That look could take someone's eye out
Hello, hello? What have I done wrong?
There's always something to be sorry for
